Buying a new Christmas tree every year isn't really sustainable, so we’ve found this great tree-friendly minimalist DIY project that's made from old cardboard; it can also be folded up and stored for reuse same time next year. There are templates and instructions available for two sizes: a large one to store your presents under, and a smaller one that can be made to decorate your home or office. The bigger tree is the perfect alternative for a young couple living in a smaller apartment that just doesn't offer the kind of space that a real tree takes up.
Used cardboard boxes are actually easy enough to get your hands on: you can ask a grocery store or bottle store if they have any leftovers they're willing to hand over or sell for cheap. Don't worry about the markings on the box – this just gives you a great excuse to paint and decorate the final product so that it really brightens up your living room. We're all for making things out of what would otherwise be regarded as trash! And you can paint over it again next year for something new and fresh.
Each pyramid is made by joining four panels together. The tutorial shows the use of specific pins and clips, but if you can't get your hands on these, perhaps you can use a staple gun or glue (remember, though, that if you glue it together you won't be able to fold it down for future storage).
