I love discovering new hacks to make my life easier in the kitchen. You can view dozens of awesome tips and tricks for food preparation and storage here. We even have a bunch of fridge storage and efficiency hacks posted here.
But I may have just discovered the most powerful one yet. With this hack, you can create an air-free seal inside a plastic bag to keep your food fresh as long as possible.
Check out the video to see just how it is done:
As you can see, it is insanely fast and easy; you can do it in under a minute. All you need is a fairly large tub of water, a plastic bag, and the item you want to keep fresh. You pinch the bag almost entirely closed, but leave just one little corner open for air to escape. You then slowly lower the bag into the tub of water. The pressure of the water pushes the air out of the bag, creating a pretty tight seal around the food. You then push the remainder of the air out of the corner and shut the bag.
It is not technically a vacuum; it is hard to get this perfect, and there will still be a few little pockets of air inside. But it is as close to vacuum-sealing as you are going to get without actually purchasing an appliance for it. And let's face it—vacuum sealers are expensive. So this is an awesome alternative if you are on a budget—and it could not be easier!
