Fruity Fun: How to Carve Your Very Own Watermelon Basket

Fruity Fun: How to Carve Your Very Own Watermelon Basket...
I've seen some really cool artistic watermelon carvings, much like those incredible pumpkin carvings, but I never actually thought that I could do one on my own. Net time you have people over for special meal, you should totally impress them by serving your fruit salad in a hand-carved watermelon basket! It looks a lot more complicated than it actually is, so you'll definitely blow your guests away.

You'll need:

  • A nice big watermelon
  • Large knife
  • Thin serrated knife or craft knife
  • Non-toxic marker
  • Melon-ball tool or ice cream scoop

Find the middle of the watermelon and draw a horizontal line around it. On the top half, draw two lines in the center to meet the half-way line – this is the guide for the basket's handle. You need your big knife for this next step: cut away the two parts that are on either side of the handle, and remove the flesh from under the handle. Then all you need to do is get the rest of the flesh out so that you now have space for your fruit salad, or whatever you want to serve in there. Easier than you thought, right? Now that you have the basic template you can either leave it as is, or cut out some shapes or patterns to give it your own bit of flair.
