Have you ever had a craving for ice cream, only to be disappointed when you opened up the empty freezer? If you have an ice-cream maker then sure, you can make it yourself, but that takes time. There's actually a much easier and quicker way to make ice cream in just a few minutes, and all it takes is shaking up a bag of regular ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.
Intrigued?
You need:
• ½ cup milk
• ½ cup cream
• 3 tablespoons sugar
• ½ teaspoon vanilla essence (or whatever flavor you want e.g. chocolate syrup or mint extract))
• 4 cups ice
• 8 tablespoons salt (larger crystals will work better than regular table salt)
The first four ingredients are mixed together in a bowl and then poured in a Ziploc/freezer bag. The, the ice and salt are placed into a larger Ziploc bag, along with the first bag. After shaking this all up for just five to 10 minutes, you can open up the bags to reveal actual ice cream! Then you just top it however you want (chocolate sauce and nuts for me, always) and enjoy satisfying that craving.
There's some really interesting science behind this cool trick; the salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, thus allowing the milk mixture to freeze at a lower temperature than is normally needed. It may look like magic, but it's pure basic science.
