When I saw this owl cake my heart nearly melted! Those big round puppy dog eyes, the little claw-toes peeking out, the Hello Kitty bow… Isn't it a hoot? (That may not be my finest moment…) Of course I frantically started thinking of which cake shop I could call to make this for me until I read through the tutorial and decided that with a bit of confidence and care, I could totally pull this off. I might not be the cake boss, but I sure as hell will become one for an owl cake as adorable as this.
It does look like it's going to be complicated just by looking at the finished cake, but the tutorial really breaks it down easily for you. The 'feathers' are made by cutting discs of fondant (or chocolate modeling clay if you prefer), so get whatever colors you like; apart from that, you just need the obvious cake layers, frosting and some tools to get the job done.
Owl definitely be making this soon! (Ok, I may have a problem…)
Thanks to Kat from Joyfullyhome Owl Cake Tutorial (Recipe and Directions Link) for this adorable owl cake.
Fun fact: did you know that the collective noun for a group of owls is a parliament? A parliament of owls. Sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it?
